Comment Elsewhere: Judeo-Calvinism?

here:
on Winchester: “Judeo-Calvinist dreariness”?????

It’s bad enough we get folded in with Christendom, but you’d think the culture that produced the Song of Songs would get an exemption from accusations of Calvinst Victorianism.

[Yes, I know "Calvinist Victorianism" is a linguistic and historical atrocity. That's my point.]

Actually, "Calvinist Victorianism" is an intriguing concept. :)

Check out the second Times review of the same book. Really, really terrible writing, hard to keep your eyes focused on for even a paragraph at a time. But, quite likely because she's not male, Bentley does manage to shed a little more light on the author: someone capable of describing "the women of Asia as 'more plumlike than melonlike of breast, spare rather than full of buttocks and hips'" while himself married to a Chinese woman.

Nothing, as far as I can tell (truly reading the review is beyond me) about class or power.

What's truly scary about that is that she is, supposedly, a multiple book author, including erotica. Yech.
