Because history is not destiny... yet.
Or that ants think rice krispy treats are food?
That part, I get. Starches and sugars. I've seen ants swarm glue. Apparently these are cigarette-wrapper ants who got lucky.
I once frequented a laundromat that didn't have much in the way of pest control. I would experiment with the ants. I found that they really liked a McDonald's hamburger bun, and they liked the inside of a french fry, but they did not like regular Coke. Evidently, the acid overcame their attraction to the sugar.
I wonder if the fact that it was liquid mattered. There are ants that prefer fats/oils to sugar, as well as carrion-oriented protein-eaters.
Did anyone else envision forensic investigators striding over a moon-scape of burned forest... finding a campsite... squatting down... raking through the ashes and debris... finally picking up a rice krispy treat corner."Here's the culprit.""Why can't people properly extinguish their rice krispy treats?! Oh, the humanity."
